Meet Konnie Wells An Engineer Who Is Revolutionizing the Black Hair Industry

  • PublishedFebruary 13, 2024

Konnie Wells’s journey into engineering began in high school, where she was introduced to the National Society of Black Engineers. This initial exposure ignited her passion for the field, which she further cultivated during her college years at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, where she delved into 3D printing and design. But it wasn’t until her best friend gifted her a 3D printer that Wells found the perfect intersection of her love for technology and her fascination with hair.

With almost 30,000 followers on TikTok and millions of views on her videos, Wells has become known for elevating beloved beauty products and accessories through her innovative designs. From braiding stands to gel wristbands and protractor combs, she’s constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the beauty space.

However, Wells’s foray into beauty innovation was born out of necessity. Growing up, she had to learn how to do hair after her older sister left, often resorting to DIY solutions due to financial constraints. This early experience with makeshift tools inadvertently prepared her to become a leading innovator in the beauty industry.

As Wells continues to merge the worlds of 3D printing and beauty, her focus remains on making beauty products more functional for Black women. With Black Americans spending billions annually on beauty-related items, Wells sees a glaring need for true equity in the industry.

Through her company, Krysanthum, Wells is not only creating innovative products but also striving to invoke change within the beauty industry. Her ultimate goal is to own a beauty supply store that caters specifically to the needs of her community, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for beauty enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Despite the challenges she faces, Wells is determined to blaze a trail in the beauty space and inspire others to do the same. With her ingenuity and determination, it’s clear that she’s well on her way to making a lasting impact on the world of beauty.
