Michael B. Jordan, the acclaimed actor and producer, is not only making waves in Hollywood but also leaving a lasting impact on the world of college basketball through his commitment to supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In a recent interview with USA Today, Jordan discussed his passion for HBCU culture and his dedication to uplifting student-athletes through the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic basketball tournament.

Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Jordan’s love for basketball was cultivated in his hometown, where he watched Knicks games with his father and absorbed the competitive spirit of the sport. It was this upbringing that instilled in him a drive to excel in whatever he pursued. Reflecting on his roots, Jordan acknowledged the importance of giving back to the community that shaped him.

The idea for the Legacy Classic tournament stemmed from Jordan’s observation of the lack of high-profile basketball events specifically tailored for HBCUs. Inspired by his own experiences and fueled by a desire to celebrate HBCU culture, Jordan partnered with Invesco QQQ three years ago to create a platform that would showcase the talent and achievements of student-athletes from these institutions.

In the wake of the heightened attention on HBCUs following the events of the summer of 2020, Jordan recognized an opportunity to amplify their voices and provide them with the recognition they deserve. For him, the tournament is not just about basketball; it’s about empowering young athletes and fostering a sense of pride in their heritage.

The inaugural Legacy Classic, held in Newark in December 2021, was a testament to Jordan’s vision and commitment. Featuring matchups between renowned HBCUs such as Howard, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, and Delaware State, the tournament garnered attention and acclaim for its celebration of Black excellence in sports.

Now, in its third year, the Legacy Classic continues to grow in strength and significance. With thrilling matchups and fierce competition, the tournament serves as a platform for HBCU student-athletes to showcase their skills on a national stage. From Grambling State’s victory over Jackson State to the exhilarating “Battle of the Real HU” between Hampton and Howard, the Legacy Classic exemplifies the spirit of excellence and camaraderie that defines HBCU athletics.

For Michael B. Jordan, the Legacy Classic is more than just a basketball tournament; it’s a testament to the power of investing in the next generation and honoring the legacy of HBCUs. As he continues to champion their cause and provide opportunities for student-athletes to shine, Jordan exemplifies the true essence of leadership and philanthropy in action.
