Zeita Merchant, a woman of many firsts, is set to make history once again as the first Black female rear admiral in the U.S. Coast Guard. From her roots in Jackson, Mississippi, to her distinguished career spanning over 27 years, Merchant’s journey is one of determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to service.

Merchant’s path to greatness began with humble beginnings and a strong foundation instilled by her parents, who emphasized the importance of family and community service over material wealth. A standout student, Merchant excelled academically, eventually graduating as salutatorian from Lanier High School before pursuing higher education at Tougaloo College.

Although Merchant initially aspired to become a doctor, financial constraints led her to explore alternative career paths. It was through the Coast Guard’s College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative that Merchant found her calling, embarking on a journey that would see her rise through the ranks and shatter barriers along the way.

Throughout her illustrious career, Merchant has been a trailblazer, challenging stereotypes and defying expectations in a historically white, male-dominated organization. From her groundbreaking roles as captain of the Port of New York to her historic promotion to rear admiral, Merchant has paved the way for future generations of women and minorities in the Coast Guard.

Merchant’s achievements are a testament to her resilience and unwavering determination to succeed. As she prepares to assume her new role as rear admiral, Merchant remains committed to inspiring others and making a lasting impact on the future of the Coast Guard.
